Vodafone Cuts Down Easy Plans, Still Too Expesnive

By Benedict Wee

Just over 2 weeks after announcing their lowest text/call plan (in New Zealand) Vodafone has decided to further cut their prices for Easy plans in order to compete with newly launched telco 2degrees.

Their Easy 20 is now $16.95 (once $18.95) and it gives you:
  • 20 anytime minutes/month
  • 60 Nights & Weekends minutes/month
  • 40 texts
  • 10 picture messages
  • 100MB data (for 3 months)

Their Easy 60 is now $29.95 (once $34.95) and it gives you:
  • 60 anytime minutes/month
  • 60 Nights & Weekends minutes/month
  • 60 texts
  • 10 picture messages
  • 100MB data (for 3 months)
Their Easy 150 is now $49.95 (once $59.95) and it gives you:
  • 150 anytime minutes/month
  • 120 Nights & Weekends minutes/month
  • 60 texts
  • 10 picture messages
  • 100MB data (for 3 months)
So basically what this means is that they've moved from a mid-1990s pricing structure to an early 2000 one. Good to see they're finally moving along and they only have about half a decade or so to go before they actually reach reasonable prices that the rest of the world is paying.

What irks me though is that they only decided to start being competitive when competition appeared. Why couldn't they give us more reasonable rates to begin with?

The Easy plans are contracted for 12 months (and they don't subsidize mobiles, boo!) so my advice is still to wait until 2degrees gets its act together and releases their postpaid plans before committing yourself to Vodafone for a year.
